Table Tennis

Despite not having a very clear origin, although it does have its history, table tennis is a sport that emerged in the United Kingdom , around the year 1870. Not being able to go outside to play because the rains were intense, they devised how to play with racquets thumbnails above a table of pool , which later would be changed by a table of wood divided by a net attached to poles.

Table tennis

Table tennis is a sport that is practiced individually or in pairs and is performed on a wooden table divided by a net through which the ball must pass without touching it.

What is table tennis

The tennis table is also called Ping-Pong which is a registered trademark and is a game similar ball in principle to the lawn tennis , which is played on a flat table which is divided into two equal courts by a network fixed in its width and located in the center. The objective of table tennis is to hit the ball so that it can go over the net and bounce off the opponent’s half of the table in such a way that the opponent cannot reach or return it correctly.

The ball, which is hollow and light, is propelled back and forth through the net by small rackets that are held by the players. The game is quite popular worldwide. In most countries it is very well organized and they perform it as a competitive sport , especially in Europe and Asia , and especially in China and Japan .

Table tennis history

The game was invented in England in the 20th century and was originally called Ping-Pong , a trade name. The name table tennis was adopted between the years 1921 and 1922 when the old Ping-Pong Association that had been formed in 1902 began to function again. The original association had been broken around the year 1905, although apparently the game continued to develop in parts of England , outside of London, and by the 1920s it was being played in many countries around the world.

Led by representatives from Germany , Hungary and England , the International Table Tennis Federation was founded in 1926, whose founding members were England, Sweden, Hungary, India, Denmark, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Wales. By the mid-1990s, more than 165 national associations were members.

The first world championships were held in London in 1927 . In the mid-1950s, Asia emerged as a team of champions, and since then the men’s event has been won by either Japan or China , as has the women’s event, albeit to a lesser extent. In 1980 the first World Cup was held , and Guo Yuehua from China took first place. Table tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988 , with singles and doubles competition for men and women.

The basic techniques for playing table tennis are divided into positions and are as follows:

Initial position

  • The racket must be held in the palm of the hand.
  • The big and index fingers should be placed parallel to the end of the straight side of the rubber band.
  • The other fingers are placed together around the handle to give more stability .
  • The feet should be shoulder- width apart , knees bent, and slightly bent forward.
  • The racket must be placed in front of the player’s body.

Backward movement

  • The right foot takes a backward oblique position .
  • The hips and waist should be rotated.
  • The arm rotates back and down a little.

Forward movement

  • Weight is transferred to the foot that is forward.
  • Move your arm forward and up.
  • Rotate the waist and hips forward.

  • The racket should end forward and up and then return to the starting position.

It is one of the most important blows table tennis and you can add up points in against if done incorrectly. The rules of this type of tennis may vary throughout the year for this reason, it is important that the players are aware of them. The service or serve begins with the ball in the palm of the hand , open and flat , this hand must be immobile during the service and you must try to throw the ball into the air without turning.

Table tennis rules

The basic rules for playing table tennis are as follows:

  • At the beginning of the service the ball must be immobile in the palm of the hand and this must be open and extended behind the baseline.
  • The ball must first land on its own, pass the net and land in the opponent’s court.
  • If they are double matches, the service must be taken from the right side of the table.
  • Every two shots, the players must exchange positions.

The ball or ball used in table tennis must be spherical and made of a material known as celluloid . They are generally only yellow or white in color and should weigh approximately 2.7 grams and have a diameter of 40 mm.

Paddles are called rackets and can be of any size, shape, and fart. What is required is that 85% of the mass of the racket is made of wood . Some of them are currently made of layers of cardboard fiber , glass or compressed paper . The part where the racket is held by hand is covered with cork to facilitate handling and prevent it from slipping in the player’s hand.
