What is pole vault?

Pole vault history

This discipline dates back to the Cretan , Celtic and Dutch populations . The horizontal jumps were the first to be incorporated into the sport and the first competitions of the 19th century were performed with long jumps with a pole . In 1850, the English gave the jump a vertical position and in that year, began to perform in jump with impulse . At the beginning of the sport, a very heavy pole was used, with more than 10 kilograms, but then the material evolved changing the material for bamboo in 1905.

Technique

The pole vault consists of trying to reach the highest possible height with the help of a pole which is supported by a box at the end of an impulse race . At the end of the last century, pole vaulting was practiced with poles made of different types of wood , such as fir, ash or chestnut. The need that arose in competitions to increase the lever to achieve greater jumps led to the construction of poles made of different materials , mainly fiberglass .

Pole vault rules

Among the most important rules that we can mention of the pole vault are the following:

  • Athletes have three different attempts to overcome the height, which increases according to the rules of the test .
  • If three consecutive invalid jumps are made , the athlete will be disqualified.
  • If the bar fails to stay in the athlete’s supports during the jump, it will be disqualified.
  • After takeoff, if the athlete sets the lower hand on top of the upper or moves to the top of the pole, if subject, stabilizes or repositions the hand the bar during the jump will be eliminated.
  • If the player has a delay during the execution of the attempt, he will be disqualified.

Pole vault phases

  • Race phase : this is a progressive phase and it is in the last five strides that the maximum acceleration is achieved . At the start of the run, the pole is in a vertical position, the right hand is placed next to the right hip and the left hand is at chest level . The elbows should be joined to the body and the hands should be approximately 60 centimeters apart. The pole will have to go down gradually until it reaches a parallel shape with the ground, as the athlete reaches the box.
  • Take-off phase : the take-off foot is perpendicular to the grabbing hand, the arm will be straight and when the jumper leaves the ground, the pole will be bent .
  • Rolling-up phase : the jumper must be with his back to the ground , the body takes different positions that will help him overcome the bar.
  • Bar step phase : the hips are propelled up with the feet with a push with the arms, then, rotates on the bar, getting into a hanging position . The left arm is fully extended and the hand releases the pole.

  • The Box : this is the container that is constructed of a hard material to be able to house the end of the pole to achieve support in the development of the jump. It should be 1000 millimeters long inside and 600 millimeters wide at the top. The bottom of the box slopes from the level of the track to the place where it joins the top , which is 200 millimeters deep from the pavement surface.
  • The pole : it can be made of any material and its length or diameter does not matter, but its surface must be completely smooth , it can be covered by adhesive tape in the area that belongs to the grip and in the lower part.
  • The uprights : these are the vertical posts that are responsible for supporting the crossbar or the batten. Its shape and dimension are not under the regulations, but it is said that the upright meter should be made of a rigid material .
  • Crossbar or strip: it  is placed horizontally and indicates the height of the athlete must jump. It is made of fiberglass or some resistant material, but it cannot be made of metal. It has a length between 4.48 m and 4.52 m and a weight of 2.25 kilograms.
  • Supports : they are attached to the uprights and are circular in shape .
  • Landing zone : it is a rectangle with a length of at least 5 meters and a width of 5 meters as well.
