Definition of omnivorous animals
Thousands and thousands of species inhabit nature. Each species fulfills a role within its room system. There are those who reproduce in one way, there are those who behave in another. With so many species, variety is the law . It is not surprising that food is also very different.
Food fulfills a role within nature beyond the acquisition of nutrients. It is a system of regulation . To prevent overpopulation from happening, nature creates for each animal a predator or consumer . The consumer of one animal is the prey of another animal. Without lions, the number of zebras would exceed the statistic . In turn, there would be an excess consumption of grass and herbs. This would generate other problems for the rest of the species .
Nature is a bit like the economy : excesses in one sector cause deficits in others.
But not all animals are like zebras and lions. Not all of them move in the meat or vegetable pole. Some, in fact, are very opportunistic. They are adapted to all the nutritional sources they have on hand. We refer, in this case, to omnivores .
Omnivorous animals are those that eat meat and vegetables . In this regard, its nutritional sources are varied.
But what are they beyond this? What are their characteristics? What exactly do they eat? We will talk a little more in detail about this.
Characteristics of omnivorous animals
- Their main characteristic is that they are creatures whose diet is based on plants and meat.
- Their teeth are adapted to the different reality of their food . They have different kinds of teeth.
- They have a digestive system adapted to the needs of the moment.
- To be an omnivore , your diet cannot be accidental. It must be regular and constant, in such a way that it becomes a habit.
What do they eat
As you can see, their diet is basically made of meat and plants. It is common to see some omnivores eat roots on the one hand, and worms or insects on the other, such are the cases of some birds and marsupials . But you can also see the example of creatures that eat the meat of small animals , or seeds or derivatives of crops . Some dogs eat fruit in times when food is scarce.
Types
Omnivorous animals can be classified according to their groups. Here are some of them.
- Mammals : we humans are in these. But there are also specimens such as: pigs, bears, hedgehogs and rodents .
- Birds: among which are chickens, cassowaries, ostriches, seagulls, corvids, among many others.
- Fish: among which the most famous are piranhas.
- Reptiles: a well-known case is that of turtles.
Where do omnivorous animals live?
The habitat of omnivorous animals can incorporate much of the terrestrial and aquatic territory . They can live in savannas, jungles, forests, some deserts, and Nordic sites such as tundras (although to a lesser extent).
How is your teeth
Your teeth are quite a particular issue. They have teeth adapted to chewing meat and vegetables. That is, they have the canines necessary to tear the meat, and the molars to crush and crush hard vegetables.
Reproduction
The reproduction of omnivorous animals is not something that is subject to the way these animals are fed. We can meet mammals, whose reproduction is viviparous. We can meet birds and other animals, whose reproduction is oviparous.
