Base plate

When we have to analyze the different components or parts that are available within a computer equipment , the motherboards play a very important role within the equipment, and also have a great responsibility in relation to the operation of the systems . They are also known as motherboards and make up a necessary and important component that must be present in all current computer equipment to achieve proper operation., existing in different formats depending on the device in which they are installed.

What is a baseboard?

motherboard is a table of PCB circuits wherein are included the elements of greater importance of a system and which are interconnected with each other so that in this way the equipment can operate properly .

Characteristics of a motherboard

The main characteristics that a motherboard or motherboard has are the following:

  • It is also known by the name of motherboard or motherboard .
  • It contains a chipset that is the connection center of the computer .
  • It has RAM memory and expansion buses.
  • It has a panel that allows you to connect external devices.
  • Inside the box we can find internal connectors and sockets for the installation of other components.
  • It contains software known by the name of BIOS and which is responsible for carrying out the basic functions.

The basic components or the parts that every motherboard must have are the following: one or more power connectors , the CPR socket , the RAM memory slots and the chipset . It is noteworthy that the motherboard is divided into two distinct parts, one of which is known under the name of North Bridge and is the part that is responsible for managing the various connections that exist between the computer , the memory RAM and GPU ; and the second is the south bridge , which is the one that allows the connection between theperipherals and storage devices , such as the hard drive .

The motherboards that were manufactured after the year 2001, are generally classified into two large groups:

  • The group for AMD processors .
  • The group for Intel processors .

What is it for

The motherboard of the computer serves as a main circuit that is responsible for connecting and communicating all the devices and components that are connected to it. Facilitates communication between devices . They function as a foundation for all components of the computer.

The history of the motherboard begins in 1947 when William Shockley , Walter Brattain and John Bardeen , all scientists from Bell Laboratories , invented the point-contact amplifier transistor , leading to the development of the miniaturization of electronic circuits ; invention that would divide the history of first and second generation computers.

Another invention that influenced the creation of the motherboard was that of GW Dummer , who in 1952 presented the idea of how to use a solid material block to connect electronic components without the need for connecting cables .

Patty McHugh , is considered mother of the motherboard , an IBM engineer who in the late 80s created the concept of modular motherboard that we see today. The creation of the motherboard simplified the way the components of hardware interact, because from that moment it was only necessary to load the drivers for the new component we wanted to install to make it all work.

How a motherboard works

Recall that the main purpose of the motherboard is to integrate the operation of the components . This process is divided into two groups that are known as bridges . The north bridge is responsible for making the CPU, GPU and RAM one unit. The south bridge is in charge of integrating peripherals, video output and storage.

It also has different parts that perform different tasks, for example

  • The clock that regulates the speed of the tasks coordinates and schedules their operation.
  • The CMOS, which is a type of memory that stores some data that must remain constant over time even if the equipment is not connected to electricity .
  • The buses , which are space for exchange of information or energy.
  • Ports and connectors for peripherals.
  • Slots of expansion for connecting plates.
  • RAM memory slots .

There are several types of motherboards depending on their size, among them we can mention:

E-ATX Extended ATX

This motherboard is slightly larger in size than the standard ATX . This is the board that is generally used the most frequently on the market and is one of the ones with the best power . Like the high-performance Chipsets , it allows up to 8 modules for RAM memory.

It is the most common size and is called a standard motherboard . We can find from very powerful boards which have a great processing capacity and possibilities , to the most basic motherboards.

These boards have a reduced standard size and are smaller than ATX. Part of the ATX and have in common the anchor points that depend on the size of the tower, even if the anchors coincide.

Mini ITX

This is the type of format smaller but is able to achieve a performance similar to the plates more base large . It is ideal for mounting compact equipment that includes work teams up to small-sized gaming PCs .

Mini STX

These types of motherboards have a fairly small size of approximately 5 × 5. It was introduced to the market by Intel on their NUC computers . They are ideal motherboards to be placed in very small equipment.

Motherboard Importance

The motherboard is very important because depending on the type of motherboard mother who is elected, will be choosing the same time, the ability to take the team . Then the motherboard will depend on all the other tools that are included in the computer such as RAM , the number of USB ports you have or the number of units of hard disk that can be used.
