History of jiu-jitsu

The word jiu-jitsu means ” soft art ” and its origins can be found in India, in the times of Buddha , more than 2,000 years ago. At that time, Buddhas needed to create a type of self-defense that did not use weapons since their religion forbade them. The enemies of the Buddhas knew that weapons were forbidden and for this reason, they suffered constant attacks and that is how they devised this martial art.

Later, it managed to spread throughout China where it was also adopted by the clans of wars mainly in Okinawa and Japan . In Japan, it had its beginnings between the eighth and sixteenth centuries when battles took place on the melee battlefields. The samurai aimed to never give up and decided to adopt a fighting style that would allow them to continue fighting even when unarmed.

With the name of jiu-jitsu it began to be used around the year 1600 when these samurai became masters of martial arts and that is how different types of techniques began to be created .

There are several types of jiu-jitsu, among them it is possible to find the following:

  • Koryu jiu-jitsu : this type of modality began to be practiced from the year 1868 and is characterized by using the Menkyo system which includes a series of traditional and very old lethal tactics which are grouped in a code called Shoden makimono .
  • Gendai jiu-jitsu : this is a method that began to be used in 1868 and its main goal is to be able to train the practitioner in a holistic way . Here you can find different disciplines such as Daito-Ryu, Shudokan Jitsu ryu and Danzan Ryu.

The fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu revolve around discipline , intelligence, and technique . Therefore, it takes a lot of patience to start learning this fight and to understand how it really works in order to learn in the best way. We can say that Jiu-Jitsu is based on three main pillars , which are main parts of the structure of the martial art , and that help develop the techniques of the sport. Among the basics of jiu-jitsu are the following:

  • Base : When we talk about the base of Jiu-Jitsu we refer to the legs and knees since they are the support of our body. To have a solid and resistant base , you have to know how to position your legs and knees, learn to move without losing your balance without letting your opponent dismantle their base.
  • Posture : Posture is another important pillar, and refers to the alignment of the body during combat. To guide the alignment, it is necessary to know how to move the head as this is the most important part, since it is the heaviest part of the body and, when moving, the whole body follows it.
  • Control : the ideal is to have control over the opponent and know how to dominate him . To achieve this, you need to observe every move, understand your strategy, and create a way to reach it through it. In Jiu-Jitsu, the joints and limbs of the body are the target and the opponent’s strength must be used against himself.

Jiu-jitsu techniques

Among the techniques that can be used in the practice of jiu-jitsu we find the following:

  • Nage Waza : involves the projections and techniques that are applied standing up and the techniques in which the attacker is positioned on the floor . The hands (Te Waza), the hips (Koshi Waza), the feet and the legs (Ashi Waza) can be used.
  • Katame Waza : this technique is based on grip and is divided into immobilization techniques (Asoe Komi Waza), strangulation techniques (Shime Waza) and dislocation techniques (Kansetzu Waza).
  • Atemi Waza : they are a series of techniques by means of which the opponent can be incapacitated through the use of fist blows , with the hands, elbows, knees, feet, heels or even with the back of the head.
  • Submission techniques : are those that can force the enemy to surrender due to the keys that are made in it, which are extremely painful . Some of them are the arm lock, kimura lock, mata león, americana lock and cow hand lock.
  • Knockdown techniques : they are a series of movements through which an attempt is made to create an imbalance in the opponent so that he falls to the ground and the situation can be dominated. It can occur through the leg takedown, firefighter takedown, pass the sweep of one leg and call on guard and then take the ankle.

Japanese jiu-jitsu also has belts, like other martial arts, which are:
