One of the main means of transportation that exist today are cars and these are in turn composed of important and fundamental parts that they need both to be able to function properly and to provide protection against accidents or blows. One of these parts is the chassis of the car, a vital part for its proper functioning.

What is the chassis?

The chassis of a car is itself the structure that is responsible for giving the foundation to the means of transport and that also provides all the necessary support to the parts that make up the car.

Chassis Features

The chassis of a car also known by the name of frame is the frame whose main purpose is to fix all the other elements that are part of the car. Among the main characteristics that can be observed in the chassis and that must also be present for it to function properly, the following are mentioned:

  • The chassis is considered as the main support of all mechanical means.
  • It has the ability to roll without having a full body .
  • It can be adapted to several different types of car bodies .
  • It can also be lengthened or shortened depending on what the client needs and requests.
  • Its structure is completely hard and rigid .
  • It must have a total of 6 gears of which one must be the reverse gear.
  • Its steering is built using a type of hydraulic assistance .
  • The brake systems have double circuits .

What is it for

The chassis of a car has a very important purpose and use because it serves so that all the parts that make up a car can be joined correctly, thus making the car work correctly. All the elements are fixed thanks to it in such a way that the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, steering and even the bodywork can work as a whole.

It is also a fundamental part so that there is an adequate relationship between all the parts and the operation of the car, it supports the weight of each and every one of the elements of the car which allows it to have the ability to support different types of loads including to the occupants of the vehicle.

Evolution

At the beginning, the first cars that were built had two important elements, on the one hand the bodywork and on the other the independent chassis that was placed on racks . It was a type of structure that was composed of beams that were placed longitudinally and transversely, thus forming a type of rigid framework on which the other mechanical elements of the car were then placed to later place the bodywork.

Today, the chassis is made up of several pieces that are welded together little by little, allowing chassis manufacturers to create the same platform for different types of bodies or to make modifications to them. The technical evolution managed to produce a series of modifications that made possible the development of more advanced products depending on the demands of the customers.

Chassis types

There are several types of chassis depending on the use that is needed, in such a way that we can find the following classes in the automobile markets:

Ladder chassis

This is the oldest type of chassis that exists and it is common to find it in current cars, mainly those of the pick – up type , SUV , buses or trucks . Its main characteristic is that the bodywork in this type of chassis is placed mounted above it. It is also formed by a pair of beams that travel the car in a longitudinal and is attached to the parts by means of steel plates having the ability to support the other parts of the car.

Monocoque chassis

Also known as compact chassis, it is the most common type that can be found in the market. It is used by large automobile manufacturing companies today and is mainly characterized by having a rigid structure that is also easy to build, which allows it to be mass-manufactured. It gives the car a lot of stability and protection in case of accidents, however, it is quite heavy which makes it not really profitable.

ULSAB monocoque chassis

This is very similar to the previous one but with the difference that its weight is very light . It is manufactured by inserting polypropylene between the light steel pieces in order to finally be able to obtain a reduction in terms of rigidity and the weight of the frame . It is widely used in the manufacture of fine vehicles such as Jaguar, Ferrari and BMW.

Tubular space chassis

This type of chassis is very expensive and is used only to make racing cars because due to its great price it is not profitable at all. Its structure is very stable and its main objective is to provide protection to the pilot by preventing the body from deforming in the event of a collision or accident.

Backbone chassis

In this case, a backbone is created that connects the rear axle with the front axle by means of a single structure. It is quite heavy and cannot be used in sports vehicles, it is mainly used in roadster type cars .

Chassis maintenance

Chassis maintenance is of the utmost importance because when it is not done properly it can affect steering , braking and wear the tires of a vehicle. The chassis must be checked in search of possible cracks that could produce a risk when driving. At least twice a month, it is important to clean it and ideally it should be done by professional people so that they can remove residues and impurities .

For cleaning, the ideal is to raise the car by means of a mechanical bridge so that it can be cleaned using a pressurized steam jet and thus eliminate scale and impurities. It is common for steam washing hydro used water , at high pressure and temperature . It is important to remember that, after cleaning, the parts can dry out and therefore must be properly lubricated . After the wash is complete, it is also common to apply a protective coat made with a WD-40 oil blend to help maintain good lubrication for a longer amount of time.

Importance

The chassis is one of the most important parts of the car as it is responsible for ensuring that the tires have the ability to roll on the road correctly and that the steering systems can function properly. It is the part that receives all the force of the car , the load , the mass and the weight that is located inside the car and thanks to it, the different elements of the car can be placed in the correct position . It is the means by which people can guarantee their safety when they are inside the car, as they are also responsible for absorbing impactsand avoid deformation of the structure , reducing the possibility of damage when an accident occurs.
