Chassis types

There are several types of chassis depending on the use that is needed, in such a way that we can find the following classes in the automobile markets:

Ladder chassis

This is the oldest type of chassis that exists and it is common to find it in current cars, mainly those of the pick – up type , SUV , buses or trucks . Its main characteristic is that the bodywork in this type of chassis is placed mounted above it. It is also formed by a pair of beams that travel the car in a longitudinal and is attached to the parts by means of steel plates having the ability to support the other parts of the car.

Monocoque chassis

Also known as compact chassis, it is the most common type that can be found in the market. It is used by large automobile manufacturing companies today and is mainly characterized by having a rigid structure that is also easy to build, which allows it to be mass-manufactured. It gives the car a lot of stability and protection in case of accidents, however, it is quite heavy which makes it not really profitable.

ULSAB monocoque chassis

This is very similar to the previous one but with the difference that its weight is very light . It is manufactured by inserting polypropylene between the light steel pieces in order to finally be able to obtain a reduction in terms of rigidity and the weight of the frame . It is widely used in the manufacture of fine vehicles such as Jaguar, Ferrari and BMW.

Tubular space chassis

This type of chassis is very expensive and is used only to make racing cars because due to its great price it is not profitable at all. Its structure is very stable and its main objective is to provide protection to the pilot by preventing the body from deforming in the event of a collision or accident.

Backbone chassis

In this case, a backbone is created that connects the rear axle with the front axle by means of a single structure. It is quite heavy and cannot be used in sports vehicles, it is mainly used in roadster type cars .

Chassis maintenance

Chassis maintenance is of the utmost importance because when it is not done properly it can affect steering , braking and wear the tires of a vehicle. The chassis must be checked in search of possible cracks that could produce a risk when driving. At least twice a month, it is important to clean it and ideally it should be done by professional people so that they can remove residues and impurities .
