Artistic expression

For many, art is meant to instill a mix of emotions in the viewer, such as beauty, wonder, surprise, sadness, anger, and even disgust. Some works of art generate feelings quite quickly, while others depend on the thought and knowledge of the intended audience. In reality, our response to art depends on factual knowledge about the world , cultural knowledge , knowledge gained from personal experiences, and even knowledge about the process that art represents.

What is artistic expression?

The artistic expression is the answer to the need to communicate or express one or a series of thoughts by the artist, which wants to share with the rest of the world to get an answer or some kind of interpretation.

Elements of artistic expression

There are many elements of artistic expression depending on the type of art we are referring to. For example, in the theater , the different elements of artistic appreciation include the spectator and the work , as the most important aspects. However, there are specific elements of the theater such as:

  • Substance : refers to the subject that the work is going to deal with or that it tries to communicate. It is the concept that wants to be expressed, the emotions, feelings and moods that the author has and that he wants to share with the viewers.
  • The form : it is the way in which the substance is going to be projected. It includes forms ranging from stories, poems, dances, dramas or plays, in short, any type of artistic expression.
  • Technique : it is based on making adjustments between the substance and the form of the work. It is a personal way that the artist has to achieve his main objective. The technique is also the way that artists have to differentiate themselves from others.

In the case of plastic artistic expression , we can mention elements such as lines , width , depth and geometric shapes that are used. These shapes can be figurative and abstract. In the case of painting , colors and textures are the most important elements, the materials used are also important and the type of paper plays a very important role within the elements.

Types of artistic expression

Among the most important types of art that exist we can mention drawing, watercolor painting, poetry, theater, scrapbooking, acrylic painting, architecture, sculpture, photography, theater, dance, music . As we can see, there are many types of artistic expressions that exist in the medium, each with different elements .

The art form is the way in which the different elements of art are put together and organized to form a work of art. Each artistic style will have its different forms of style, all of them particular and distinctive . There must be a correspondence and coherence between the form and the content of the ideas in order to bring a work of art to life.

The techniques are all those procedures in which the materials are used. They are those tools that allow us to draw, paint or sculpt. The possibilities of materials to perform different techniques are innumerable and have been changing thanks to innovation . There are dry techniques , when the pencil is used, and wet techniques , when we use aqueous media to produce art. We can also mention charcoal, collage, tempera and engravings.

The artistic theme is what the artistic work wants to reflect towards the viewers . It is usually done through the visual arts and iconographic themes . They are closely related to the artists, the historical context and the culture of the time. The different artistic genres have come to divide the themes into groups, giving them a broad and proper category according to the form and content of the work.

Artistic expression in children

In the childhood stage, empowering the child’s creative thinking is an excellent tool to induce and promote learning that helps the child to create and innovate. The arts make the child focus his attention and develop the ability to sustain efforts for longer periods of time. It is also a very good form of communication between parents and children. Through painting, one is able to understand and know things that can generate concern in children, since the ability to express themselves is freer. Artistic expression allows the child to develop emotional , social ,bodily , conceptual and linguistic .

Artistic expression is important because it allows us to reflect and communicate emotions, concerns, fears and perspectives on life through lines, drawings, rhythms and gestures. It potentiates the sensitivity , initiative and creativity in people, making them capable of expressing their personal thoughts and developing the necessary capacities to produce artistic expressions . There is a better development of motor skills and there is an approach to culture.
