Biography of Ada Lovelace

Augusta Ada King known as Ada Lovelace, born in London on December 10, 1815, with the title of Countess of Lovelace, was a mathematician and writer. The only daughter of the well-known poet Lord Byron and Anna Isabella Milbanke, she enjoyed a good social position that allowed her to interact with the most important scientists of her time.

At an early age, her talents in the world of mathematics linked her amicably with the English mathematician Charles Babbage and his invention of the analytical engine.

In 1835, she married William Lord King and became Lady King. With William, Ada has three children: Bryon born in 1836, AnneIsabelle born in 1837 and Ralph Gordon born in 1839.

In 1837, her husband had the royal title of Viscount of Ockham and that of Earl of Lovelace. From that moment she stopped being called Lady King to sign as Ada Lovelace.

In 1841, she wrote to Charles Babbage to work with him and put her mother’s life aside to dedicate herself to a more intellectual one.

Between the years 1842 and 1843, Ada Lovelace translated an article by the Italian military engineer Luigi Menabreas on the analytical machine and supplemented this document with her own notes that she would call “Notes” , which were interpreted as the first computer program . This was an algorithm designed for the machine to process.

In 1843 , Ada Lovelace’s Notes were published by the English magazine Scientific Memoires with the title of ” Sketch of the analytical engine invented by Charles Babbage” but when discovering that the authorship was of a woman, scientists of that time did not take it really.

Ada Lovelace died on November 27, 1852 at the age of 36 from cancer in the uterus. His remains were buried alongside his father in the Nottinghamshire village of Hucknalla.

Analytical machine

The analytical engine designed by the British mathematician Charles Babbage had the purpose of calculating numerical differences to obtain tables of numbers that would allow running programs and performing any type of calculation. Unfortunately Babbage’s idea could not be realized at the time because he did not have the funding and materials to develop his invention.

Interested in Babbage’s invention, Ada analyzed in detail the use of this machine for carrying out mathematical calculations. This is how mathematics was able to optimize the design of Babbage’s machine , including the use of punched cards and a programming language with logarithms for the analytical engine to process.
