In this speech, Abraham Lincoln spoke of the principles of human equality that were included in the Declaration of Independence and motivated the desire for freedom , unity and his ideal of self – government . An excerpt from the speech read as follows:

“Four twenty-seven years ago our fathers created a new nation on this continent, devised in Freedom, and dedicated to the premise that all men are created on equal terms.

We are now engaged in a great civil war, to test whether that nation, or any designed and delivered nation, can last for long. We meet on a great battlefield. We have come to dedicate a part of this field, as a final resting place for those who gave their lives so that that nation could live. It is entirely correct and appropriate that we do this.

However, in a broader sense, we cannot dedicate, consecrate, sanctify this soil. The mighty men, the living, and the dead who fought here have already done this in a way beyond what our powers can add or subtract. The world will hardly take this into account, and it will not be able to remember what is said here for long, but neither will they be able to forget what all of them were able to do here. “

His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln . His mother died when he was young, on October 5, 1818. Shortly thereafter, his father began a relationship with Sarah Bush Johnston , with whom he married, a good woman with whom Abraham Lincoln quickly became attached.

Before marrying, Abraham Lincoln had several romantic relationships, in 1837 he maintained a relationship with Anne Rutledge but she died before marrying. Some time later, he was with Mary Owens , however, nothing happened. Finally, on November 4, 1842, he married Mary Todd .

Their children went:

  • Mary «Mamie» Lincoln
  • Abraham Lincoln II «Jack»
  • Jessie Harlan Lincoln

His death affected many of his followers who wanted to honor all his good works. In 1867, the United States Congress decided to start the construction of a monument in his honor, but it was not until 1911 that it was authorized. The first stone was laid on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, 1914  and it was inaugurated until May 30, 1922 . It is located in the extreme part of the National Mall , in Washington DC .

Abraham Lincoln is considered by many to be the best president in the history of the United States who used all power to win the Civil War and thus end the slavery that existed in the country. He managed to face the biggest crisis in the area and come out on top during the process. He managed to rebuild the country and give life hope to all its inhabitants by modernizing the economy and strengthening the federal government.
